PMBOK® 8th Edition Framework Reference

Project Management Focus Areas

The PMBOK® Guide 8th Edition identifies five Focus Areas (similar to process groups in earlier editions):

  1. Initiating – Defining a new project or phase; establishing project vision and alignment
  2. Planning – Establishing scope, objectives, and actions; developing project plans, estimates, and risk responses
  3. Executing – Performing the work as defined in the plan; managing teams, stakeholders, and resources
  4. Monitoring & Controlling – Tracking progress, reviewing performance, managing changes
  5. Closing – Finalizing all activities, completing deliverables, capturing lessons learned

Project Performance Domains

The PMBOK® Guide 8th Edition identifies eight Project Performance Domains:

  1. Stakeholders – Identifying, analyzing, and engaging stakeholders effectively throughout the project
  2. Team – Building, developing, and managing an effective project team
  3. Development Approach and Life Cycle – Selecting and tailoring the development approach and project life cycle
  4. Planning – Organizing and coordinating project activities, establishing baselines and plans
  5. Project Work – Establishing processes and performing work to deliver project outcomes
  6. Delivery – Delivering the scope and quality that the project was undertaken to achieve
  7. Measurement – Assessing project performance and taking appropriate actions to maintain acceptable performance
  8. Uncertainty – Managing risks, ambiguity, and complexity throughout the project
